Family and Friends’ Tournament 2008-9; Amherst School, Riverhead
Sunday 30 November 2008.

The KJCA had 89 entrants for its 20th Family and Friends’ Tournament. For the third season, the event included a Christmas Party and 28 more attended just for the festivities. The tournament was organised by last year’s winner, Julian Petrick, and compered by GM Chris Ward. The event was overshadowed by the sudden death the previous day of Bob Wade, our great friend, who had been due to attend. After initially considering cancelling this year’s event, it was decided that it should rather be played as a celebration of his life. Before the start, everyone stood for a minute’s silence and before the prize-giving, we all drank a toast to his memory – the adults with his traditional New Zealand White or Australian Red.

The winners were The Chess Mess! – the Selway family: James (Eltham College), Alexander (Eltham College Junior School), Thomas (Bickley Park School) and dad, Richard – with an outstanding maximum 10 points out of 10. To the victors falls the traditional honour (?) of organising next season’s event. Second equal were The Carlton Collective – Matt, James (Harenc School, Footscray) and Heather (West Lodge Prep, Sidcup) Wagstaff-Hall, Charles Watson and Daniel Reidy (Barming Primary) and The Chipstead Checkmates – Tim, Patrick and Rachel Smith (both Amherst School, Riverhead and Westerham CC) and Sushovan and Zara Hussain (The Granville School, Sevenoaks and Westerham CC) – both with 9 points.

The Adults Prize was won by Richard Selway with a maximum 5 points out of 5.  Second equal on 4 points were John Fagg (Tunbridge Wells CC), Martin Jones, Guy Mullin-Henderson, Victoria Neveling and David Underwood. The Juniors Prize was won by Raveena Rao (Bromley High School) with a maximum 5 points out of 5. Patrick Smith was second on 4.5 points and third place on 4 points was shared between Duncan Bell (St. Olave’s Grammar, Orpington and Beckenham & Bromley CC), Elizabeth Elgar (Amherst School and Westerham CC), Oliver Petrick (Amherst School and Sevenoaks CC), Ella Seagrove (Amherst School), James Wagstaff-Hall and Sophie Wahts (Barming Primary).

The Best Team Name Prize also went to The Chess Mess! As ever, Chris Ward awarded many prizes for the day’s more memorable and hilarious incidents and the good atmosphere in which the tournament was played formed a fitting send-off for Bob Wade.
